20/20 VISION? WHY EYE EXAMS ARE STILL IMPORTANT?

What is 20/20 Vision?

It refers to normal vision. According to an expert ophthalmologist “A person with 20/20 vision can see what an average individual can see on an eye chart when they are standing 20 feet away”. Having 20/30 vision is worse than average vision while 20/15 vision is better than average vision so 20/20 can not be considered as a perfect vision but can be called normal vision. If a person does not have 20/20- vision then contact lenses or eyeglasses are suggested to provide 20/20 vision to that person.

Why eye exams are important?

  1. School children require a good vision for learning and an eye exam ensures that child can see properly, so in this way, eye exams help children succeed in school.
  2. Eye exams are the best way to examine if a child or any person is developing myopia, timely diagnosis helps in preventing further complications that may be caused due to myopia.
  3. Only proper eye exams can ensure that your vision is as clear as it seems, vision screenings at school or motor vehicle department can not give accurate results about clear vision.
  4. Eye exams can help detect and diagnose serious eye problems and eye diseases on time before it gets more complicated to treat or manage eye problems such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, or diabetic retinopathy.

Eye exams and children:

Children can’t tell properly if they face any issue in clear vision. Proper eye functioning, as well as good vision, are important for the developmental growth of a child and these can only be ensured after getting proper eye exams done. Many eye conditions are much easier to diagnose, treat and manage at an earlier and developing age for eyes so eye exams are important to diagnose any eye health and vision issues as early as possible.

Eye exams over age 40:

When a person starts to age, his body starts to show aging signs. In the same way with the aging of the body, the eyes also start to get weak and various age-related eye conditions such as presbyopia, cataracts, and macular degeneration can develop. Some of these might lead to loss of vision if not prevented and treated on time. Only proper eye exams can detect these eye conditions as these don’t show clear symptoms.

Eyes are one of the best blessings from the Lord so we should not take eye health for granted and get annual eye exams done.
