How do you set meaningful goals

Every year millions of people make a list of their new year resolutions based on all the things that they want to do and achieve in their life. The list comprises of all kinds of goals and resolutions; from professional and career-oriented like finding a new job that empowers them, to academic like getting the acceptance letter from that university they like, or financial, like saving up money to go on the trip that they have always wanted, or for personal development as well, like joining the gym to stay healthy and fit, or learning a new skill or hobby. It can be anything important to them or would lead them to the life that they want for themselves.

All this goal setting is highly important irrespective of what they are. No matter which country, background, gender, race, or culture we belong to; we all need some goals, some dreams, and some desires in our life. These things give us the motivation to do great things in life and become a better person and a greater person in the process. Without goals and ambitions, our lives seem purposeless. 

However, the sad thing is that most people give up on their new year’s resolutions sooner than you would think. Studies show that more than 75% of people give up on their goals after just 30 days into the new year. And only 8% of people end up ticking off all the things on their list by the end of the year.

One might wonder that why is this so. Is it because they are not thinking rationally and realistically when it comes to all the changes that they want in our life in the coming year? Or Is it because they lack commitment? Might be. Might be not. From what we have observed, the problem lies when it comes to goal setting. The general population does not set up meaningful goals for themselves. And by meaningful, we mean goals that inspire us. And goals that align with our values and morals. It’s not enough to just set goals. What we need to do is to consciously evaluate and prioritize our goals. Once we are clear about that, then we need to come up with a plan as to how we are going to accomplish all those goals. Not only that, but we also need to attach some deadline to our goals. Time is limited, and just like everything else, our goals also have a natural deadline to them. For example, there is no point in working hard for that admission test to your favorite university after the application process had closed. As Robert Herjavec says;

“A goal without a timeline is just a dream.”

Once we are clear about all the above-mentioned things, accomplishing and staying committed to our goals does not seem that difficult. And once we start accomplishing our dreams and the goals that we set for ourselves, we will say amazing things happening in our life. In the words of Les Brown;

“If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, your gifts will take you places that will amaze you.”
