Everything you NEED to know about finding an acting agent

Everyone, even the people who are not in the entertainment industry, knows that a major part of being a successful actor has to do with finding a good agent. An acting agent is going to do all the background work for you while you work on perfecting your craft and skills. They are going to inform you about all the upcoming opportunities, help you get auditions, advise you in selecting the correct roles, and represent you in front of filmmakers that are going to give you your job. Hence, hire the perfect acting agent and you are halfway there.

So, if you are an aspiring actor and thinking that it’s time you hire an acting agent, here is everything that you need to know and consider so that you don’t end up getting the wrong one and sabotaging your career;

  • Find good talent agencies

The first thing that you need to do is to find good talent agencies. Because good talent agencies will give you good talent agents. You also need to find the one that is the most relevant to your work. Getting a talent agency that focuses on voiceover actors is not going to do you any good if you want to make to on Broadway.

You can talk to your actor friends if they know any good travel agencies, read articles about the best talent agencies, and use tools like IMDbPro.

Once if you have shortlisted the talent agencies that you are sure are best to represent you and your work, go to their websites and shortlist the agents that you would want working for you. It is important to go through their departments and existing clients before you proceed to the next step.

Once you have the names, google them and find their social media profiles. Read as much s you can about them. Chances are that you would be able to find the interviews and profiles of the majority of them on casting websites like Backstage.

  • Market Yourself

Just like it is with everything these days, you also have to market and introduce yourself to these talent agencies. The three major things that you need to send to every shortlisted talent agent are;

  1. Your Headshot
  2. Acting Resume
  3. One-Page cover letter

Your goal is to impress them enough that they want to meet you in person to consider the possibility of having you as their potential client.

  • Prepare for the Interview

The majority of the work has been done, and you are just in the final steps of getting the agent that you want. Make sure that you visit the place one day before, in case the interview is in person so that you don’t end up getting late on an actual day. And although you have sent all the required documents before, still make sure that you bring copies along with you as well.

  • Wait for the final word

And finally, the last step. Your part till now has been done and now you just let fate do your job. Understand that the agent might reject because of multiple, and valid, reasons. Don’t be disappointed. Just go back to your shortlisted agents and pick the next best one and try to get an interview with him.
