How to find work as an actor during a pandemic

The year 2020 has not been kind to anyone, and the entertainment industry is no different. Actors, especially local and Broadway are struggling to find any kind of work. And since it is the kind of job in which SOP’s like social distancing and wearing masks are out of the question, so work from home is no option either.

However, no matter how hard time can be, there is always something you can do that will help you get closer to your goal. In case of being an actor, here are some of the tips that you can use to find work during the pandemic;

Utilize the time to work on your branding. Post as much as you can on your social media profiles. This will increase your user engagement and will bring you to the spotlight, as more people would notice you.

One of the things that you can do that will significantly increase the chances of you getting an acting gig is reaching out. You need to make yourself aware of the in’s and outs of the industry that you are working in, and be aware of all the opportunities that are not only available for you right now, but might also be available for you in the future. You need to be ahead of your colleagues. One way to do this is by reaching out to all the filmmakers that might have movies coming next year, or even in a year or two. Search for some of the major film festivals that might be happening in your vicinity, and find out the filmmakers that you would like to work with. Try to find out more about them and their work. Follow them on social media and stay updated with their career. Reach out to them, introduce yourself and your work, and if possible, schedule a meeting with them. In short, become visible to them so that if they have any future work coming up, they do have you in their mind.

It would be better if you go for filmmakers who are at the beginning of their career or have SHORT films rather than feature films. Because these filmmakers are more approachable, they do not have any agent or assistant. You can directly talk to them and come up with an opportunity to collaborate with them.

Another thing that you can do while staying home is to build your network and your inner circle of fellow actors, filmmakers, producers, and directors. This way you all can create opportunities for each other instead of searching for them. Organize a reading session on zoom and share the link on social media. Have healthy discussions with them about works that you all find interesting. Suggest each other movies and plays. This way you can also get familiar with some of the great works that you might have been unaware of before. You will get to know about different people’s perspectives and their creative journeys. You will also get the chance to share your journeys and inspire each other.
