Woodworking is defined as the craft of carpentry, cabinet making, along with any form of art and design that relies on making things from wood. There are many types of woodwork and if you are interested to know more, here are some of the most versatile ones:

Wood burning (Pyrography)

Pyrography is the free handed art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks, resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning.

Wood carving

Wood carving is a form of woodworking in which the expert uses cutting tool (knife) in one hand or a chisel in two hands to carve wood. He or she can also use a mallet. The work often results in wooden figure or a sculpture.

Woodturning

Woodturning is the craft of using the wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a shape that is symmetrical around the axis of rotation. Like the potter’s wheel, the wood lathe is a simple mechanism which can generate different forms and variety. The maker is known as a turner, and the skills needed to use the tools are traditionally known as turnery.

Scroll Sawing

It is the freehand cutting of shapes in thin wood. The scroll saw uses thin blades that allow cutting very small radius curves and delicate cuts. Works can range from flat, plaque style, to elaborate 3-D structures.

Wood Mosaics

Wood mosaics can come in several forms like:

Marquetry:

A form of inlay in which pieces of wood slab are cut into shapes and inserted into another piece of slab, which is then laminated to another surface, such as boxes or furniture.

Intarsia:

A mosaic like design that uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted together to create an illusion of depth.

Art and Design

Furniture: from the basic to functional 3-legged stool, to detailed cabinetry, furniture making remains the backbone of woodworking.

Boxes: Boxes can be made by many techniques, including band sawing, turning, and traditional dovetail joinery.

Repair and restoration:  Items of importance are worth preserving. Restoration and repair requires knowledge of the original construction methods, as well as salvage skills.

Green woodworking

Green woodworking is a form of wood craft carpentry that works unseasoned or “green” timber into finished items. Unseasoned wood is freshly felled or preserved by storing in a water filled pond to maintain its naturally high moisture content. Green wood is much softer than seasoned timber and is therefore much easier to shape with hand tools.

Timber framing

Timber framing and “post-and-beam” construction are traditional methods of building with heavy timbers, creating structures using squared-off and carefully fitted and joined timbers with joints secured by large wooden pegs. If the structural frame of load-bearing timber is left exposed on the exterior side of the building it may be referred to as half-timbered, and in many cases the infill between timbers will be used for decorative effect. The country most known for this kind of architecture is Germany. Timber framed houses are spread all over the country.
