Do You Need Blue Light Glasses?

Blue light is one of the colors on the light spectrum. We are exposed to blue light regularly. From the smartphones that we use to even the sun and indoor lights, we use in our houses. But, why does it seem like that blue light has been the talk of the town only in the recent months? Well, one of the main reasons is the fact that nowadays everything comes with smart technology and our on-screen time has increased exponentially. With the digitalization of everything and smart technology, our exposure to blue light has exceeded its limits and this is why blue light filtering glasses might come in help.

But, let’s start with the basics first like, what is blue light?

Visible light is divided into seven portions i.e. seven colors of the rainbow. Each color has a different wavelength and energy levels. Blue light has the shortest wavelength of all the seven colors and has the highest energy level. This is why blue light is often referred to as “High-Energy Visible (HEV) Light”. This blue light has further two known domains. This is different from UV rays. The cornea and lens part of the eye restrict UV rays from reaching the retina of the eye. But, blue light can pass the cornea & lens and reach the retina.

This is why blue light exposure can contribute to digital eye strain. According to various research studies conducted throughout these years, one domain of the blue light damages retinal cells and the other domain disturbs our sleep/wake cycle. Our brain associates blue light as daylight which is why blue light disturbs our sleeping patterns. On top of this, excessive blue light exposure can cause headaches, blurry vision, and disorientation.

Now coming to the next query, Do you need blue light glasses, and how do blue light filtering glasses work?

As explained earlier, all seven colors of the light spectrum have different wavelengths and energy levels. Blue light filtering glasses only block the wavelength of blue light and lets the other color wavelengths pass through. The blue light filtering lens has a slight pale tint to it, it not only blocks blue light but also modifies the light spectrum wavelength to help reduce the strain on our eyes

According to research studies, the average screen time of an adult is around 11 hours per day. With this many hours spent in front of a screen, there is no doubt our eyes are under constant strain. But, if you spend more than 11 hours per day glued to a screen for work or entertainment purposes, then you should invest in some kind of blue light filtering glasses. There are plenty of options available in the market nowadays. People who have started using blue light filtering glasses have reported that their headaches have disappeared and their sleep patterns are not all over the place now.

The benefits of blue light filtering glasses are still under research for now. If you are interested in buying a pair of blue light filtering glasses then you should consult your ophthalmologist first.
