The diesel is what you really want, with its 236 pound-feet of low-end torque. It has excellent fuel economy, with 40 mpg  highway and a range of over 450 miles. It is also available with a six-speed manual transmission. For around $18,000, you can find a Sportwagen with less than 50,000 miles for. HID headlights, a panoramic sunroof, heated leather seats and navigation. It is a great family car no matter which version you get, but a used TDI is the top pick.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica

The minivan has made the list. You may be thinking that an SUV or sports sedan as the big family car, but power sliding doors and enough room so your kids can play tag on the way, $20,000’s best is the Chrysler Pacifica. It isn’t just roomy, it has a ton of advanced safety gear and low-mileage. The Hybrid is fantastic, but it does make a few noises as well as questionability when buying secondhand.
