Over the years safety has become one of the biggest concerns for everyone. It’s not like as if nobody cared about being safe before, it’s just that with technology being constantly advancing and people being more exposed, it has become incredibly difficult to ensure it. Every year almost 1.35 million people lose their lives because of road accidents and the number increases to 20 to 50 million in case of non-fatal injuries. It is because of these alarming numbers that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) has changed the criteria for its award system. According to the new rules, to win the 2020 Top Safety Pick Plus award or to be included in Top Safety Pick honours cars have to be able to ensure the security of the people inside as well as the people outside of the car. Strictly following its new policies, IIHS selected 23 cars for the Top Safety Pick Plus award and 41 for the Top Safety Pick. Among the two categories, the Top Safety Pick Plus was lead by Mazda while the other had most of its winners by the Hyundai Motor Group.
Mazda had a total of 5 of its vehicles in the Top Safety Pick Plus. These five cars were; Mazda 3 Sedan, Mazda 3 hatchback, Mazda 6 Sedan, CX – 3 SUV, and CX – 5. The CX-3 was initially launched in 2019 but the 2020 redesign had automated braking support and better headlights. These improvements made the CX-3 SUV jump from being in the Top Safety Pick category in 2019 to Top Safety Pick Plus category in 2019. Same goes for the Mazda 3. After Mazda, Subaru had the most winners in the mentioned category with its 4 vehicles; Subaru Outback, Subaru Forester, Subaru Legacy, and Subaru Cross Trek Hybrid. Some of the other winners of the Top Safety Pick Plus are;
- Toyota Camry
- Honda Insight
- Nissan Maxima
- Lexus ES
- Tesla Model 3
- Genesis G70 and Genesis G80
- Audi A6
- Lexus NX
Among these only Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Subaru, and Nissan fall into the non-luxury car brands while all the others are categorized as luxury brands.
When it comes to the second category, Top Safety Pick, Hyundai Motor Group had the most winners with a total of 14 of its vehicles making the list. Furthermore, the Hyundai Motor group also had three of its vehicles in the Top Safety Pick Plus. Together, these 17 winners make the Hyundai have the most winners overall. Some of these 17 winners include; Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Palisade, Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Tuscon, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Veloster, Hyundai Nexo, and Hyundai Palisade. Other winners of the Top Safety Pick include;
- Honda Civic Coupe
- Civic Sedan
- Corolla Hatchback
- Honda Accord
- BMW 3 Series
- Audi A7
- Mazda CX-9
- Audi A8

I have a 2019 Maza 3 and it’s sublime. Also Mazda 3 forum members have suffered serious accidents in them and walked , proves the credentials are real.
